“What was Averyana like before diagnosis? Before diagnosis Averyana was enjoying her summer, like any normal 7-year-old, getting ready to start 2nd grade. She was very excited to get back to school and looking forward to playing soccer again.
What did Averyana enjoy doing? She loved going to church, hanging out with friends, playing soccer, drawing, dancing, swimming, and time with her family.
What was it like getting the news? The news was absolutely devastating. There were no signs or symptoms. We couldn't make sense of how it could be happening after nearly 6 years in remission.
How has her diagnosis changed her? Honestly, it hasn't changed her much other than not being able to do some of the things she used to. Her faith is so strong that she simply said "I've beat it before and I'll do it again. God's got me!"
How has the diagnosis changed the family? The diagnosis has turned our family upside down. We've all had to rearrange our lives and schedules. Averyana's dad and brothers have to deal with her and me being gone all the time for treatment. It's made it very difficult to still have family time or enjoy any of the things we did pre-diagnosis.
What has Averyana missed out on? Averyana's missed out on going to school, playing soccer, being able to attend church, and birthday parties, and having the freedom to be a "normal" child.
What has the family missed out on? The family has missed out on church, work, gatherings, and time together.
What would the dream mean to Averyana and the family? The dream would be a breakaway. It would allow us a family time where we weren't focused on Averyana's treatment. That we could just relax, have fun, make memories, and spend time together outside of the confines of our home and the hospital. “
