Kai is a 9-year-old from Fallbrook, CA. He has such an energetic, fun, loving and kind soul. Kai’s journey began when he was 2 and he slipped and fell, hitting his head. He was rushed to the ER and the doctors ran a CT scan and monitored him before sending them home. The next day, they received a phone call from the hospital asking to bring Kai back because something didn’t look right with his results. They ordered for an MRI and discovered a tumor in his brain. He was later diagnosed with a Thalamic brain tumor.
After a failed biopsy, the family decided another surgery was too risky and set up a schedule of MRI’s every 3 months to monitor his tumor. Time pressed on and the family was blessed to be on watch and wait for 6 years. During that time, the family was blessed with another son and a baby girl named Evie, who surprised the family with a birth diagnosis of Down Syndrome. She has some challenges but overall is doing amazing.
Kai has been through many surgeries and difficult challenges but he has never complained and always fought through. These challenges have made him the perfect, compassionate playmate and an amazing big brother to his youngest sibling, Evie.
In the summer of 2020, Kai had another MRI. He had so many years of stable MRI’s or very slight growth. This time the news wasn't expected. His tumor, located in his thalamus, had grown significantly. His doctor referred Kai to oncology so we could discuss chemotherapy because surgery was not a safe option. Kai has 18 months of weekly chemo.
Chemotherapy is hard and Kai does experience fatigue, anxiety, and nausea but he's kept his upbeat attitude throughout treatment and is truly inspiring. He never complains or asks, ``why do I have to have a brain tumor?`` Everyday he smiles, plays with his siblings and makes the family laugh with his silly dances or cardboard costumes and creations.
Just 7 months after Kai’s chemotherapy started the family was thrown another challenge as his mom, Rachael, started to experience chest pains, fatigue, and shortness of breath. She headed to the ER and they got her in quickly for a chest x-ray then a CT scan. The doctor came in and broke the news to her that she has a mass in her chest, above her heart. She was alone at the hospital and had to make the difficult call to let her husband know.
She underwent two biopsies as the first biopsy sample was not what the doctor needed to make an official diagnosis. She was then diagnosed with Mediastinal large B cell non Hodgkins lymphoma.
Through all the challenges, the family has kept their loving, positive, and grateful attitude.
Our mission is to raise $5,000 to send Kai and his family to send his family to a magical trip to Disneyland.
It will cost $5,000 to fulfill our goal to cover the costs of Kai's trip to Disneyland with his family.
If just 250 people gave $20, we would reach this goal!
Any funds raised exceeding Kai's goal will go towards our dream bank, to help more kids like Kai.
